Leasing a mobile phone?

Seriously. I finally throw down the cash for a Razr after the *embarrassment* of having a phone more than a year old, and guess what - now I want the new one. I'm one of those people who has thrown away the land line, and now I use my mobile phone for everything. Having a area code from a place I lived two moves ago is fine by me, I think that's actually pretty cool, but companies haven't figured out how to really build loyalty with consumers. Hasn't anyone figured out a way to sign me up for like 5 years, and then I'll get a new phone every year - since technology leaps about every year?

The model of the annual contract with mobile companies is outdated, and for sure not built on what consumers want. As I right this, I'm guessing there might be some third party already trying to figure something like this out, but it won't really matter to me until one of the major network providers make it a reality since they own access to the networks. My money is on Apple to jump on this and put this category on its head too.

As the price of new phones continue to come down, a phone plan like this has to be coming (right?), and believe me I won't be the only gear head throwing down .99 per whateva for the access.
